One Woman's Adventure
A Cowman's Wife is a fasinating account of one woman's adventure in south-western Arizona. Mary Kidder Rak captured this chapter of her life in very personal and humurous terms as well as giving us a glimpse into ranch life in the early 1900's. If you're looking for a book that gives you an up close and personal view of the life of an adventurous woman or of life in the American SW., this is a must read! PS: Check your maps for the ranch Mary and her husband lived on, it's still a landmark!

This book is a great disappointment. I have just returned from a visit to Bali and Jakarta and found this book to be almost totally useless. In fact because the book contains advertising from MCI and American Express I think that it could be possible that only establishments (retuarants and hotels/resorts who remunerate Foder's get mentioned in this book. Specifically the information on Hotels and restuarants in Bali is so skimpy as to be laughable. Also applies to restuarants in Jakarta. I got mich more information by searching the web. All in all, don't waaste your money on this book.

A Hometown Went to War : Remembrances of World War II
Published in Unknown Binding by Sandy Bottom Press ()
Author: Rolland E. Kidder
Average review score:

1997 Writer's Digest "Best Life Stories"
"Wartime and postwar generations alike will find "A Hometown Went to War" compelling reading. In straightforward, delightfully uninhibited language, 28 World War II veterans from one small town - Jamestown, New York - have shared with author Kidder and the rest of us their wartime memories: the duties and risks of daily existence; moments of humor; the fears, heartaches and dramas of battle; and the ironies of luck and survival. A helpful reference with maps, endnotes, a bibliography and a good index, the book is an amazing story of ordinary young people doing extraordinary things in every corner of the world and the war. Skillfully and interestingly, Kidder weaves commentary on events, weapons and personalities around the stories to place each man and woman in the broader perspective of the overall war effort. An underlying theme of the book is that individual wartime sacrifice at home and abroad was made with an incredible commitment to common purpose, an intense spirit of national unity, and an overwhelming sense of loyalty to comrades and cause. The author expresses for the veterans the hope that the lessons of World War II will help younger generations face the challenges that inevitably lie ahead."

Shared Values for a Troubled World: Conversations With Men and Women of Conscience
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (March, 1994)
Authors: Rushworth M. Kidder, Jo Spiller, and Harlan Cleveland
Average review score:

A trustee's recommendation for "Shared Values"
Kidder's book gives serious food for thought. Our world is very diverse. People come with different needs, different agendas, and different cultural backgrounds that color their understanding of others. We seem to disagree on so much and have minimal interest in working together. Kidder stresses that our world is getting smaller and to survive and grow, we, as a world need to find a common ground from which to work together. We need to find "universal truths". There is too much at stake if we don't: concerns that affect everyone, from damage to the environment to economic issues between the haves and the have nots. Without a common ground from which to talk, to trade, and to understand each other, we, as a species are bound to fail.

In his book, Kidder interviews 24 highly respected people from a variety of backgrounds for their perspective on universal values. From these interviews, Kidder identified several important ingredients. The eight values that most often appeared were love, truthfulness, fairness, freedom, unity, tolearance, responsibility, and respect for life.

Part of our job as community college trustees is to help our school, our administration, and our students meet the needs of a growing, changing, and ever more diverse society. How will we meet those needs? What do we need to consider? This book gives some key insights to ponder and gives me personally a much broader appreciation of "diversity". I recommend it.

Sudden Exposure
Published in Audio Cassette by Dh Audio (March, 1996)
Authors: Susan Dunlap, Margot Kidder, and Margo Kidder
Average review score:

This is one author who keeps getting better and better
Jill Smith enjoys being a homicide detective in Berkley. However when Detective Jeffrey Buckner, who has return rights, comes back from another assignment, she is demoted back to the streets as a patrol officer. Jill resents Jeffrey's return just as he resents returning. While patrolling her beat, Jill sees a nude protester which is a violation of a local ordinance. Jill gives chase, but stops when former Olympian Bryn Wiley asks for her help. Bryn, a local heroine, claims that someone fired a shot at her car. ........ Jill begins to investigate Bryn's claims. The vehicle does have bullet hole in the window. Bryn believes that her aging hippie neighbor Sam Johnson is the culprit. As Jill looks deeper into the case, trying to figure out who is actually the culprit in this not so neighborly spat, Bryn disappears. Jill, realizing that this case could return her to homicide, digs deeper. However, the case is about long term hatreds that are never forgotten and sometimes leads to murder. Jill must set aside her personal agenda and solve the case before someone is actually killed. ........ SUDDEN EXPOSURE brilliantly and tenderly exposes the Berkley counterculture in a humorous who-done-it. Jill is a great police officer/detective, who in her ninth entry, remains one of the best female characters in a continuing mystery series. This reviewer enjoys all of Susan Dunlap's novels (including her other two series: O'Shaunessy and Haskell) and strongly recommends them to anyone who enjoys a quirky female detective surrounded by eccentric heroes and antiheroes (especially the latter). Exposure to Ms. Dunlap's works is good for one's health. ........Harriet Klausner

When Natural Food was NATURAL
Before the pure delightful world of natural foods turned into expensive junk food using refined flours, ORGANIC sugar and chocolate, people were creative and truly health minded.
Uprisings is an example of this time when brilliant and delicious recipes were truly healthy. This book is a collection of most popular recipes from whole foods bakeries around the country (and world even) who created delightfully delicious treats to be baked in our kitchens using TRUE natural and whole ingredients.

Truly valuable and hand lettered and decorated in the tradition of the Moosewood Cookbook, this book is a treasure.

Among Schoolchildren
Published in Hardcover by Thorndike Pr (Largeprint) (May, 1990)
Author: Tracy Kidder
Average review score:

An Eye Opener
As an education major at Macon State College, I read Among Schoolchildren for an assignment for my education in a diverse society class. This book really opened my eyes to what teaching is like in the "real world." Tracy Kidder supplied very detailed information about each student in Mrs. Zajac's class and about Mrs. Zajac herself. I took note of many excellent teaching strategies used by Mrs. Zajac, and I hope to be able to apply them when I myself am teaching. Kidder's awesome description and remarkable ability to recreate various events in the book made me feel as though I were right there in the classroom. At times this was scary, seeing as how the students misbehaved quite often, but at least I now know what to expect from my own students. Hopefully I can become a wonderful teacher as Mrs. Zajac is. If you are at all uncertain about what it is like to be a teacher read Among Schoolchildren! You will never look at teaching the same way again!

The Realities of Teaching
I chose Among Schoolchildren as a supplemental text for an Introduction to Education class. I had read the book some time ago, and remembered it as being a realistic portrayal of life in classrooms. I thought my students might enjoy this glimpse into the life of a teacher, warts and all. I re-read the book and still enjoyed it very much, and found many of the relationships with students, Chris's worries about her students, and the variety of problems that teachers deal with to be on target. However, many of the elements of the elementary school curriculum have changed even in the relatively short time since the book was published. It is not the overall picture of life in elementary schools that it might have been when it was first published. Nevertheless, it is a fascinating and fun read. I enjoy reading about how other people handle difficult situations. There is always something new to learn.

What Among Schoolchildren Taught Me As I Read It
I am a college student who is majoring in education. This was the book I chose to read out of six for my education class. Among Schoolchildren was a great book for anyone who is considering the teaching profession. I recommend all future teachers to read it, as well as anyone who is already teaching. I really liked Tracy Kidder's research on each of the characters. He did not stop at what the children told him, but tried to gather information from their family members as well. He was not bias at all in writing this book. He told the truth just like it happened no matter how bad it was. I am glad he picked Chris Zajak to do his story on. She is truly a special teacher that all should try to follow. I feel as if Tracy Kidder became close to the whole class during his study of them. After being in the class for so long and watching Mrs. Zajac in action, he probably felt he could teach the class by what he learned from her. Tracy Kidder became a part of that classroom and gave his view of everything that went on. Read this book and learn what having a heart for teaching is all about.
